Þýðendakröfur
KDE er hannað til að keyra á mismunandi kerfum og verður þar af leiðandi að geta notast við ýmsa GNU/Linux - UNIX þýðendur (compilers). KDE er stöðugt í þróun, og möguleiki þýðenda á ýmsum UNIX kerfum til að byggja KDE er háð því að notendur viðkomandi kerfa tilkynni um vandræði með þá til viðeigandi hönnuða.
Þar að auki hefur C++ stuðningur gcc/egcs, vinsælasta KDE þýðandans, verið í mikilli þróun og nýlega gengið gegnum stóra endurhönnun. Þar af leiðandi er ekki hægt að byggja KDE með eldri útgáfum af gcc.
Sérstaklega gcc útgáfur eldri en gcc-2.95, sem egcs-1.1.2 og gcc-2.7.2 eiga í vandræðum með að byggja suma hluta KDE. Þrátt fyrir tilkynningar um að það sé mögulegt að nota svokallaða gcc-2.96 og gcc-3.4 (cvs), ráðleggur KDE verkefnið notkun af gcc-3.3.1, eða gcc útgáfu sem kom með stöðugri Linux dreifingu og var notaður til að byggja stöðuga útgáfu af KDE fyrir þá dreifingu.
